Under the leadership of Dr. Meghnad Saha this institution got a new dynamic approach in various fields of scientific research including X-rays, Optics, Magnetism, and Raman Effect. Recognizing its great contribution in the in various area of Physical Science, it has been given the status of an autonomous body funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the government of India and by the government of West Bengal. Currently in this institution almost 80 faculty members are working on various fields of Physics and Chemistry.
