In the scenario of teaching law in India, the National University of Juridical Sciences is an important name. Situated at the Salt Lake City in Kolkata, main motive of the law university is to transmit legal education at the both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Established with proper initiative of the Bar Council of India and Government of West Bengal, this institution is running on the motto: Yuktiheena Vicharetu Dharmahnih Prajayate which means “Judgment Devoid Of Logic Destroys”. The main goal of the National University of Juridical Science or NUJS is not only imparting legal education among the students but also to increase legal awareness among common people of the nation.

Principle Objectives of NUJS

 The National University of Juridical Sciences is running on certain major principles, such as:

  1. Advancement and dissemination of legal knowledge and process so that in the longer run it will lead to national development.

  2. In the era of globalization importance of legal awareness is increasing to a great extent. On its foundation, this institute wishes to promote inter disciplinary study of law in all sectors of life.

  3. It also aims to incorporate sense of responsibility among the students to serve the nation and society properly by sharpening their skills and through advocacy, legal service, law reforms, legislation and other professions related to it.

Academic Schools of NUJS

The NUJS is an incorporated form of several schools of study, which are independent in their respective field of operation but through various types of academic programs, they are very much integrated. Here follows the list of such schools:

  • The School of Technology, Law and Development
  • The School of Criminal Justice and Administration
  • The School of Legal Practice and Development
  • The School of Social Sciences
  • The School of Economic and Business Laws
  • The School of Private Laws and Comparative Jurisprudence
  • The School of Public Law and Governance

The research centers at National University of Juridical Sciences play quite crucial role in developing the sense of social responsibility and at the same time take a leading part in imparting philosophy of law in every step of life. Here follows names of the research centers:

  • The Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Studies
  • The Centre for Gender and Law
  • The Centre for WTO

Courses offered by NUJS

The National University of Juridical Education has got wide array of programs to be offered to the students.

  • B.A/B.Sc in LL.B: Candidates willing to take admission in this course, are required to have passed 10+2 level examination with at least 50% marks and they must have completed 20 years of age till the date of admission. This is a five year undergraduate course and divided into ten semesters. Intake capacity for this program is 125 students and this course gives special emphasis on faculties like self enquiry and critical thinking of an individual.

  • LL.M: The LL.M degree course offered by this university is a two year post graduate program. Aspirants are required to have at least 50% marks in aggregate in their LL.B or equivalent course. This two year degree program offered by this university comprises four semesters.

  • M.Phil Program: The main aim of the M.Phil program is to receive excellence in the field of legal academics. This course is especially designed for those students who obtain the wish of pursuing independent study and research and at the same time they wish to establish themselves as teachers of law.

  • PhD and LL.D Programs: The PhD and LL.D programs, offered by this university are most advanced law degrees. Participants of these courses are expected to contribute to a great extent in the field of legal research and its advancement. The aspirants will get all sorts of expert assistance not from this university only but also from other pioneer universities in the world.

Admission Procedure in LL.B and LL.M

The aspirants for LL.B course offered by the university, after passing their 10+2 level, have to fill up the application form. Then they have to sit for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and exclusively on the basis of their performance in this examination, they will be selected. After the CLAT, the qualified candidates have to sit for the specific admission test organized by the institution itself. If the candidate is securing less than 50% marks in the examination, he will no more be eligible for taking admission.

In order to apply for the LL.M course, the candidate has to obtain LL.B degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks in aggregate from by a recognized university. After filling up of the application form, the candidate has to sit for the Common Law Admission Test or CLAT. Those students who are on the final year of their LL.B examination can also apply but their admission will be confirmed only after the submission of their LL.B results with required 50% marks in aggregate.
