Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta) is the capital city of West Bengal and the educational centre of East India. Western models of education were introduced to India through Kolkata, thus paving way for the development of the modern education system in India. Kolkata has 17 public universities or autonomous institutions that award their own degrees or diplomas

Most of the universities and the institutes in Kolkata conduct their own entrance exams and accept national level entrance exams too for admissions to their programmes. Following are the main entrance exams that need to be taken for admission to various colleges and universities in Kolkata, West Bengal:

NEET (UG)
The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) will not conduct any entrance exam for admission to medical and dental under-graduate programmes. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) has replaced the WBJEE (medical) from 2013 onwards.

WBJEE
The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB) will conduct the WBJEE Common Entrance Test for admission to different degree level courses in engineering & technology, pharmacy and architecture in universities, government colleges as well as self financing technological institutes in West Bengal.

EVETS
WBJEEB conducts EVETS for admission to undergraduate degree level course in Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry in West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata.

JECA
WBJEEB conducts JECA for admission to postgraduate level Master of Computer Application (MCA) course pursued in different engineering & technology colleges as well as in different universities of West Bengal.

JELET
WBJEEB conducts JELET for direct admission into 2nd year (3rd semester) of 4-year undergraduate degree level engineering & technology / pharmacy courses for the diploma holders in Engineering & Technology / Pharmacy and B.Sc. degree holders with Mathematics as one of the subjects in the graduation level in different engineering & technology colleges as well as in different universities of West Bengal.

JENPARH
WBJEEB conducts JENPARH for admission to undergraduate degree level courses of Ayurvedacharya, Homoeopathy, Unani, Nursing and Physiotherapy in different institutes of West Bengal.

JEHOM
WBJEEB conducts JEHOM for admission to undergraduate degree level courses of Hotel Management & Catering Technology offered by the self financing Hotel Management Institutions of West Bengal.

ISI Admission Test
This is the entrance test for admission to the B. Stat (Hons) and B. Maths (Hons) three year degree programme offered by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) .

CAT
One of the toughest MBA entrance exams that needs to be taken to qualify for admission to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta and other well-known management institutes like Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management Kolkata (IISWBM).
