Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute is one of the premier film institutes throughout the nation. Established with the initiative of the Government of India in the year 1995, the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute is an autonomous academic institution and administered by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. After the establishment of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), this is the second film institute in India, which is offering post graduate diploma courses in Film and Television. This institute not only offers regular full time courses to the students, who are interested in making their career in film studies but also has come up with plans for project development and production of fiction and non-fiction films.

Aims of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute

Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) was established with certain goals and objectives, which are as follows:
  • To spread both practical and theoretical knowledge in all aspects of film and television production
  • After successful completion of the courses, granting certificates, diplomas and honors diploma and other certificates among the trainees
  • Successful co ordination of various kind of activities related to education and skill development in the arena of film and television production
Administration in SRFTI

The SRFTI is an autonomous body with a governing council, finance committee and academic council. Though it is an autonomous body, but it is under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. This autonomous body contains four departments, which are as follows:
  • The Department of Direction & Screenplay Writing
  • The Department of Sound Recording
  • The Department of Editing
  • The Department of Motion Picture Photography
Courses Offered by SRFTI

This renowned film institution offers three year post graduate diploma courses in the following subjects:
  • Editing
  • Cinematography
  • Direction and Screenplay writing
  • Sound Recording
In each of these courses, highest number of student intake capacity for each batch is 40. All the students have to attend regular classroom lectures, film screening, practical exercising and interaction with professional people in this field.

Admission Process in SRFTI

If you are interested in getting admission in the three years diploma course in Direction and Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing, then you have to be a graduate in any discipline from any recognized university. In order to obtain the three year post graduate diploma in Audiography or Sound Recording, you have to be a graduate in any discipline from any university with Physics as one of the subjects at (10+2) level.

After duly filling and submission of the application form, you have to appear for a written examination. As you will qualify for the written examination, you will be qualified for the Interactive Orientation Session and Viva Vice and finally after passing the compulsory medical examination, you will be perfectly eligible for taking admission in this prestigious institution.

Facilities in SRFTI

Besides offering excellent academic curriculum, the SRFTI is famous for offering wide range of infrastructural facilities to the students.

Film and TV Studio: Film Studio of this institution is best among the whole eastern zone. Including air conditioning and all the other kinds of modern facilities, this studio contains all sorts of facilities which can be offered to the students. The TV Studio also contains a wide array of facilities, which includes: air conditioning, 50' X 50' dimension studio floor, 3 camera set- up with control room, dimmer panel, motorized telescopic lighting grid, cyclorama facilities.

Library: The two storied library of the institution is replete with facilities like a large reading room, multi-booth viewing room and a music room, along with books and magazines on cinema, television, media, technology, performing arts and related subjects. It has also a rich collection of videos in various formats.

Separate Film Library: Film Library of this institution contains exquisite collection of Indian and foreign films.

Regional Center of NFAI: Situation of regional office of the National Film Archives of India helps the students in viewing a wide range of rare films.

In addition to this, Student Exchange Program, Auditorium and Screening Facilities of this institution also help the students excelling in their respective fields of study.
